What Takes the Longest When Creating Bespoke Lingerie?
When people think about bespoke lingerie, they often imagine sketches, measurements, or perhaps the final fitting.
Surprisingly, these are not always the parts that take the most time.
As a lingerie designer, I can often sketch a design quite quickly. Once I understand what a client is looking for, ideas come naturally. The real work begins afterwards, in the details that nobody sees.
And those invisible details are often what make bespoke lingerie truly special.
It starts with a conversation
Every bespoke project begins differently.
Sometimes a client simply wants one of my existing designs in a different colour.
Sometimes they would like a piece adapted to their body shape.
And sometimes they come with photographs, memories, inspirations, or ideas that do not yet exist as a garment.
One recent client sent several images of pieces he loved. Not because he wanted them copied, but because they captured a feeling he was looking for.
From there, I created sketches inspired by those references while developing something unique and personal.
That is often the first step of bespoke work: understanding not only what a client wants to wear, but how they want to feel.
One of the bespoke projects I am currently working on illustrates this perfectly.
The client is a man looking for lingerie for himself. While I have worked with many male clients over the years, this particular project is special because everything is new to him. He is only beginning to discover what he enjoys wearing and how lingerie can make him feel.
The challenge is not simply choosing a size or adapting a pattern. It is helping him understand which silhouettes suit him best, which materials resonate with him, and what details make him feel comfortable and confident.
Together, we discussed inspirations, colours, fabrics and shapes. I prepared sketches based on our conversations, sent silk colour samples, proposed lace options and will create a prototype before producing the final garment.
This process often surprises people.
Many imagine bespoke lingerie begins with sewing.
In reality, it begins with listening.
Understanding the person behind the garment is often the most important part of the entire project.
This is what bespoke lingerie truly means to me: not simply creating a garment, but creating a piece that feels personal, authentic and entirely designed around the person who will wear it.

Finding the right Materials
One of the most time-consuming parts of bespoke lingerie is selecting materials.
Over the years, I have collected countless samples from suppliers, trade shows and lace manufacturers.
When creating a bespoke piece, I can spend hours comparing different laces, silks and trims.
The goal is not simply to find a beautiful lace.
The goal is to find the lace that belongs to that particular project.
Some clients are drawn to delicate floral motifs. Others prefer graphic patterns, geometric designs or more structured textures.
The right lace can completely change the personality of a garment.
And finding it often takes much longer than creating the initial design.
For the client mentioned above, choosing the right lace was an important step. Because he was new to lingerie, he did not necessarily know what type of lace would best match the feeling he was looking for.
We explored different possibilities together.
Some laces felt romantic.
Others felt modern, bold or architectural.
Each option told a slightly different story.
This stage alone can take hours, but it is one of my favourite parts of the process.

From Sketch to Prototype
Once the materials are selected, the technical work begins.
For a bespoke design, there is no existing pattern waiting on a shelf.
Everything starts from scratch.
The pattern must be drafted.
Proportions must be adjusted.
Construction details must be tested.
Every line has a purpose and every seam influences the final fit.
Whether I am adapting lingerie to a male body shape, creating a custom size or developing an entirely new design, the pattern is the foundation of everything that follows.
Before creating the final garment, I often make a prototype.
This stage allows adjustments to be made before working with precious materials.
A prototype may not look glamorous.
It is simply a tool.
But it is one of the most important steps in bespoke lingerie.
This is where ideas become reality.
Sometimes a detail that looked perfect on paper needs to be adjusted.
Sometimes a neckline needs refinement.
Sometimes proportions need to change slightly.
The prototype allows these decisions to happen before the final piece is made.
For clients who live abroad, prototypes become even more important. Many of my bespoke clients are located outside France, and the prototype allows us to refine the design remotely before committing to the final version.
A beautiful garment starts with a beautiful pattern.
The Craftsmanship Behind the Final Garment
When the final version is created, every detail matters.
A long silk nightgown edged entirely with lace may require hours of careful work.
Lace must be cut by hand.
Motifs are positioned individually.
Curves are matched.
Edges are finished.
French seams are sewn.
Nothing is rushed.
The goal is not simply to create lingerie.
The goal is to create something that feels as though it was always meant for the person wearing it.
This is perhaps the stage that people imagine when they think about luxury lingerie.
But by the time I begin sewing the final garment, dozens of hours may already have been invested in conversations, research, material selection, drafting and prototyping.
The sewing is only one part of the story.

Bespoke Is More Than Measurements
Many people think bespoke means custom measurements.
And of course, measurements are important.
But true bespoke work goes much further.
It is about conversations, material choices, technical adjustments and creative decisions.
Each project evolves around a person, their preferences and the story they want their garment to tell.
It is about creating a piece that could not exist without the person who inspired it.
That is what makes bespoke lingerie different.
And that is why the most important work often happens long before the final garment is ever worn.
